The University of Bologna awards nearly 600 doctor of philosophy degrees annually. In Bologna, PhD is primarily a research degree and it is available in all faculties and departments. More than 500 positions are now available for doctoral courses under the following Schools: Civil Engineering and Architecture, Industrial Engineering, Sciences and Information Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Biology, Biomedicine and Biotechnology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Environment, Economics and Statistics, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, Law, Medical and Surgical Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, Political and Social Sciences, Humanities. A number of international PhD courses allow the Alma Mater to welcome foreign students. Internationalization is also granted through the possibility for most of the PhD students to spend a period abroad.

Competitions are based on examination and/or on qualifications’ evaluation. Courses will start only if at least three students enrol, two of whom receiving a scholarship.The XXVI Cycle doctoral courses will start on 1st January 2011 and have a duration of three years.
